Born and raised in Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast, Russ was first introduced to photography through the ocean, where he started documenting local surfing at the age of 16 (2003), using slide film and a single zoom lens. He quickly became obsessed and jumped onboard the digital revolution to purchase his first DSLR at 18, and his first underwater housing shortly afterwards.
After honing his skills in the water and learning to quickly adapt to changing light, Russ earned his stripes as a photojournalist for Fairfax Media, starting on the South Coast and working his way up to larger assignments for the Sydney Morning Herald.
Tying in his photographic work with a Bachelors Degree in Journalism, Russ spent brief stints as Assistant Editor at Riptide Magazine, and Online Editor for Stab Magazine, before founding his own online surfing title in 2012 called Cloak & Dagger Magazine, which went on to become one of the largest and fastest growing online surfing publications in the world.
Wanting to return to his photographic roots, Russ relaunched Russell Quinn Photography in 2013, specialising in commercial photography, brand activations, corporate event photography, press photography, architectural photography, interior photography, food photography, lifestyle photography and ocean photography. He has since worked with some of the biggest brands in the country including Universal Music, 20th Century Fox, Scoopon, Cellarmasters and Hotondo Homes. He has also been commissioned by some of Australia’s biggest PR & advertising agencies including AC Agency, TBWA, M&C Saatchi and Fleishman Hillard to shoot on campaigns for FitBit, Uber, Twinings, AMP Capital, Philips, Tyrrells and Bonne Maman, just to name a few.
Never loosing his passion for ocean photography, Russ has held numerous exhibitions on the NSW South Coast, including the popular ‘Noonkanleek’ and ‘Summercloud’ shows. His work has featured in numerous print and online publications around the world, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Mail, Buzzfeed, The Daily Telegraph, Stab Magazine, Riptide Magazine, Le Boogie Magazine, White Horses Magazine and Movement Magazine. His ocean work has also been widely used in various tourism and sporting campaigns, including projects for Shoalhaven Tourism, South Coast Holidays, Christian Surfers and the ABA Tour.
